Sam was due to play in the first round of the Individuals or Ladies Cup, but a week before the match she breaks her arm, so she can't play. Can the captain of her team substitute another player for her? If so, how much notice must the captain give?

I don't think substitution should be allowed. If the substitute is a better player than person they stand in for or if they are known to play well on the table the match is played on then it's not fair on the opponent. There is too much scope for argument especially if the original player was seen as the underdog.

The opponent should be given the option of either claiming the game or offering to postpone (providing the game can be played in time for the draw for the next round to be made).

If a player loses out because they are unlucky enough to have an accident or daft enough to book a holiday at the wrong time then that's too bad. They can enter next year.

...and what if Sam happens to break her arm the week before she is due to play in the Ladies semi-final or final?

That would be unfortunate but I think what I said previously should still apply. I don't think you can easily define what counts as a reasonable excuse for postponing a match - how about a friends birthday, a family get together or watching a football match? And long can a match be put off for? A week, 2, the start of the next season?

It's sad if someone misses a game but worse things happen at sea. There is always next year.
