How many teams should be promoted and relegated at the end of each season? Should a Division 2 team be allowed to refuse promotion?

I think one is probably enough with divisions of 12 teams. Some of the 2nd division teams don't want to play in the 1st division and visa versa so I think it would be likely to cause uproar if we had two teams going up and down.

I don't think we should agree that a team can stay in the 2nd division when they don't want to be promoted - it defeats the whole point of having a league. If they are that desperate to stay down they can lose a few games and let someone else go up (I believe one or two teams have done this before). I suppose we could allow the division winners to stand aside for the runners-up to be promoted but if we carry that option through with the other teams we could end up with the division losers or no team being promoted. If a team wants to win the 2nd division they should be prepared to be promoted.

PostSubject: How about three divisions ?   Promotions and relegations Icon_minitimeFri Apr 27, 2007 2:40 pm

Will there be enough teams next season to split into three divisions ?

It might make for more competition at the various levels, make for a shorter season (which causes some teams to struggle with numbers) and not result in current Div 2 teams getting thrashed when they go up (which drives teams not wanting to go up).

I'd be interested to know what others might think.....?

(That said, if we win next Wednesday, we'll have a bash next season !).

Just to say that I'm not sure that I can be there next week but please vote against the three divs on my behalf. talking with people as we've gone round pubs the last few weeks, the experienced people say that players will drop out left right and centre once weds are not 'skittles nights' - and that's what will happen to teams who get knocked out early of cups, and as a result of shorter seasons - people will fill weds with pool or long alley or sky tv or whatever and all the ones who are iffy about commitment will fall away.
if the problem it's trying to solve is teams not wanting to get promoted - that's easily solved. they don't have to - it's up to us to decide who goes up and who doesn't and we can always have a rule change to say 'if you win div 2 you choose if you wanna go up' - much better solution.
that's my two-pennorth anyway.
